New data on sudden deafness therapy - current therapy standards put to the test

Bonn/Essen, 06.05.2024: Every year, several hundred thousand people worldwide suffer from sudden hearing loss. This sudden hearing loss without an identifiable cause is often treated with anti-inflammatory glucocorticoids, which are similar to the body's own cortisone. This therapy was systematically investigated for the first time in a nationwide study. The results are now the subject of heated debate among experts: Is the common therapy for sudden deafness effective at all? This is one of the exciting current topics at the 95th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine, Head and Neck Surgery (DGHNO-KHC) e. Neoadjuvant immunotherapy represents an important potential advance in the fight against cancer cells by stimulating the immune system at an early stage, even before conventional forms of treatment - primarily surgery - are used. By activating the body's own defenses at an early stage of the disease, this concept could help to improve the overall effectiveness of subsequent surgical or radiotherapeutic measures. more...
